Red Velvet Cupcakes

Spicy Red Velvet Cupcakes Recipe (makes 12)


• 1 ¼ cup white flour

• ½ cup cocoa powder

• 1 cup white granulated sugar

• 1 tsp baking soda or baking powder

• 1 tsp salt

• ¼ cup cayenne pepper

• 2 eggs

• ½ cup sour cream

• ¼ cup milk

• 1 ounce red food coloring

• 1 tsp vanilla

• 2 tsp Siracha or sweet chili sauce alternative


• 16 oz confectioners’ sugar

• 8 oz whipped cream cheese of your choosing

• ¼ cup milk or heavy whipping cream

• 1 tsp vanilla

Pre-heat the oven to 350 and line cupcake tin. Combine cupcake ingredients, first the dry ingredients (flour, cocoa, sugar, baking soda or powder, salt, and pepper), and then the wet ingredients (sour cream, milk, red food coloring, vanilla and Siracha). Fold the eggs in last and beat until the cupcake batter is smooth. The consistency will be on the thicker side and the color should be a dark red.

Fill cupcake liners and bake for 15 minutes. While cupcakes first bake, and then cool (for at least an hour), let’s focus on the frosting. Cream cheese frosting is objective, and should be mixed based on your taste preference. If you like the tartness of cream cheese, then you can add more than the 8 oz mentioned above. If you like your frosting as sugary as possible, then you may want to put in a little bit less cream cheese (4-6 oz). Once your cupcakes are properly cooled, you can frost and decorate however you choose!
