Battered Bastards of Baseball is a documentary about the Portland Mavericks, a minor league baseball team that had a brief, memorable run in the 1970s. The Mavericks were founded by Bing Russell, a veteran actor who had a recurring role on "Gunsmoke." One of their players was Russell's son, actor Kurt Russell, and one of the bat boys was Todd Field, now a prominent director. Battered Bastards of Baseball was produced by Kurt Russell's nephews, Chapman and Maclain Way, who joined us today to share how the film came to be.
The film is available on Netflix tomorrow and will be showing at the Portland Art Museum for a one-time showing tomorrow night as well.
