Living with Cougars and Bears

Like much of the western US, Oregon is home to cougars, and that doesn't always make for friendly relations. From naming superheroes and luxury cars after them to hunting them to the brink of extinction, humans have complicated relationships with all of the large carnivores that roam the open spaces of western North America, and cougars are no different, as headlines about alleged cougar threats to Oregonians prove.

In The Carnivore Way: Coexisting with and Conserving North America's Predators noted OSU scientist Cristina Eisenberg offers a compelling account of the lives of western carnivores like the cougar and their place in our human world, blending her personal stories of her experiences as a scientist, mother, hunter, and recreationist with a comprehensive understanding of the current state of carnivore science and legislation into a narrative that educates, inspires, and offers hope.

Eisenberg will be speaking at Powell's Books on Hawthorne located at 3723 SE Hawthorne in Portland at 7:30 tonight.
