Six Ways to Fix A Mistake

Mistakes happen, but that doesn't mean it's impossible to rebuild what was damaged or to re-gain your self-esteem after the fact. Self-esteem coach Laure Redmond, author of Feel Good Naked, joined us to share the necessary steps to fix any minor or major wrongdoing, whether it's something on a business or personal level.

      1. If You Act Like a Fool; Own it Don't add to the mistake by ignoring it in the hopes that it will go away. Whether you messed up a customer order, a tattoo, forgot your spouses birthday or screwed up on facebook; be straightforward and acknowledge what you did.

      2. Listen, Really Listen and Then Listen Some More Sometimes what people need most is just to share how deeply they were hurt. The repercussions of a mistake should never be argued with or denied. Although venting is never fun to listen to, it helps people sort through their feelings and get to the bottom of your mistake.

      3. Authentic Apology Those two little words-- "I'm sorry"-- need to be heard and felt by the person who's bearing the brunt of your mistake. "Please forgive me" is also nice. It demonstrates that you understand this person has a choice of whether or not to forgive the mistake.

      4. Offer a Practical Way to Balance the Mistake In most cases you can think of a way to make amends. For example, if you've broken, lost or otherwise damaged someone else's property, you should offer to pay for it. If you're at a loss for what to offer, ask: "What can I do to make this up to you?"

      5. Understand How Your Mind Works In order to move forward from your wrongdoings you have to be brutally honest about the patterns and pathologies that seem to follow you wherever you go.

      6. Take Chances Everything you do has the chance of being wrong. However if you truly learn from your mistakes, they won't beat you.
