In The Marriage Act, Liza Monroy writes about the prospect of losing her best friend Emir to deportation. Her engagement to her high school sweetheart had just fallen apart, and Liza was petrified that being gay, Emir's life would be threatened if he returned to the Middle East. Despite her own mother's post as an Immigration Officer with the State Department, Liza decided to take action and married Emir in Las Vegas with Elvis officiating.
Liza, along with her mother, Peggy Gennatiempo joined us today to to share the tale of friendship, courage and love.
Liza and her mother will be giving a talk and reading tonight at 7:30 pm at Powell's located at 3723 SE Hawthorne Blvd in Portland.
