What You Need to Know About Your Heart's Health

Heart disease is still the number one killer in America, even with more and more Americans being put on blood pressure medications and cholesterol lowering drugs. In today's segment Naturopathic Physician Dr. Greg Eckel covered your risk factors and common signs and symptoms to watch out for.

Heart disease is a common term used to describe coronary artery disease (CAD)[3] but this is a general term that includes many disorders.

Risk factors for cardio vascular illness include: smoking, diabetes, high blood pressure, high LDL cholesterol, homocysteine, oxidative stress and sheer stress.

Cholesterol numbers, HDL, LDL, Triglycerides, are only a piece of the puzzle- cholesterol + inflammation = cardiovascular issues.

Signs and symptoms to watch for: PULSE

P ersistent chest pain-can include neck, shoulder & upper back
      U pset stomach, Nausea, Vomiting
      L ight headedness, dizziness
      S hortness of breath
      E xcessive sweating

Remembering cholesterol numbers alone isn't enough information. If you include inflammation and a few other markers such as these blood tests: HS-CRP (inflammatory marker of the heart) , homocysteine (independent marker of heart health), fibrinogen (a marker of blood clotting), your provider can get a bigger picture of heart health.

For those interested in alternative therapies, in Chinese medicine, all medicine is heart based, with your heart as the empress/ emperor. With this system, you find the underlying imbalance and treat the meridians that are out. By treating the root cause of imbalance it puts the individual back into better blood flow and nourishment and promotes overall health.
