Bicyclist seriously injured after crash into semi trailer

MILWAUKIE, Ore. - A 71-year-old bicyclist from Portland was seriously injured when he crashed his bicycle into a semi trailer in Milwaukie Saturday morning.

State police said Lawrence Mascotte was riding on the paved shoulder of Highway 224 near Southeast Johnson Road when his bicycle had a mechanical failure. Mascotte lost control and crashed his bicycle into a semi trailer. Police said Mascotte ended up underneath the trailer.

The semi truck was stopped at a traffic light on Highway 224. The driver did not feel the collision, according to Lt. Steve Mitchell. A driver who witnessed the crash pulled his vehicle in front of the semi truck to prevent it from moving.

Medics took Mascotte to Oregon Health and Science University in Portland. Police said he was wearing a helmet during the crash.

The truck driver, 58-year-old Craig Johnson of Vancouver, was not hurt.

Highway 224 was closed for about 20 minutes.
