Cabela's to open Tualatin store
TUALATIN, Ore. -- Cabela's Inc., a major outdoor outfitter chain, will open a 100,000-square-foot store in Tualatin, officials announced Thursday.
Construction will begin this fall for the store that's scheduled to open in Fall 2014. It will be Cabela's second store in Oregon, joining the 58,000-square-foot Springfield location.
Tualatin's store will be in a redeveloped area across from Interstate 5 from the Nyberg Woods Shopping Center, according to a Cabela's news release.
The new location will include a gun library, "bargain cave," fudge shop, indoor archery range, wildlife displays and an in-store pickup program, which will allow customers to pick up gear they ordered ahead of time.
"Oregon is full of people who live the Cabela's lifestyle and enjoy outdoor recreation, which makes this a perfect match," Tommy Milner, the chain's chief executive officer, said in the news release. "We've enjoyed great success at the Springfield location thanks to the support of our many loyal customers across the region, and we hope for much of the same in Tualatin."
Tualatin City Manager Sherilyn Lombos said Cabela's is known to be a tourist attraction and she expects there to be an influx in city visitors.
"They tell us people come and stay overnight, take advantage of hotel rooms and eating establishments," she said. "And the pictures they've shown us of opening day or opening week are astounding."
Lombos said she expects the store to take advantage of the surrounding nature with fishing or kayaking lessons.
"We have the Tualatin River that runs through Tualatin and we have several developments that have kind of turned their backs on the river, so when Cabela's came to town, we asked them to take advantage of the river and they were excited to do so," she said.
Cabela's, which sells hunting, fishing and outdoor gear, operates 44 stores in the United States and Canada.
