Man shot by Vancouver police makes court appearance

VANCOUVER, Wash. - The 21-year-old man shot by Vancouver police went before a judge Friday.

Darryl Eugene Humphrey Jr. is charged with attempted murder and assault.

Police say he was involved in a big fight outside the "Q" night club near 7th and Main around 1 a.m. Thursday that left a man shot in the foot.

Police were called to respond to the fight, and when they arrived they said they heard a gunshot and shortly after, two more gunshots.

They found Humphrey holding a weapon and said he refused to cooperate. That's when he was shot.

Vancouver police Officer Dennis Devlin said he saw Humphrey fire his gun "multiple times" and was the same person who Devlin later shot, according to court documents.

The shooting victim told police that he and his brothers were outside the club with friends when the fight broke out, the court documents said. One of his brothers tried to break up the fight. The shooting victim tried to help but was confronted by the suspect, who was holding a gun.

The shooting victim told police he tried to leave and was shot in his left foot after he had crossed the street.

At first Humphrey denied having a gun, but later admitted to police that he had brought one to the club, according to the court documents. While he said he wasn't involved in the fight, he told police he did shoot at a man two times who was across the street pointing at him aggressively.

According to court documents, Humphrey told police he lives in Portland with his baby's mother. He also told them he's unemployed.

Humphrey has previous weapons charges and his bail was set at $500,000. His next court appearance is set for March 21.
