Oregon No. 5 in SI preseason ranks; Oregon State 1942 win featured
EUGENE, Ore. - The Oregon Ducks rank 5th in Sports Illustrated's College Football Preview, which hits news racks locally with quarterback Marcus Mariota on the cover.
The issue has something for Oregon State Beaver fans, too: a feature about the 1942 Rose Bowl between OSU and Duke.
SI plans 6 regional covers featuring the magazine's top picks for the coming season. Another Pac-12 school, Stanford, comes in at No. 2 in SI's Top 25 and graces the cover of the California edition of the magazine.
The magazine notes that Oregon returns the core of its fast-paced, high-scoring offense, including Mariota and past SI cover figure, rusher De'Anthony Thomas.
The only marks against the Ducks: SI says offensive coordinator turned head coach Mark Helfrich remains unproven at the helm.
Oregon State didn't make the SI Top 25, but a feature on the 1942 Rose Bowl promises to show how the game "rallied a rattled country and brought together men who soon would become brothers on far-flung battlefields," Brian Curtis wrote in this week's SI. The game was initially canceled in the aftermath of Pearl Harbor due to concerns about the safety of the West Coast. The game was moved East to Duke, where Oregon State won in an upset 20-16. Curtis notes many of the players on both sides went on to fight - and even die - in World War II.
