Police: Drunken grandmother accused of leaving child outside

WASHINGTON COUNTY, Ore. -- An intoxicated 39-year-old grandmother was arrested Friday after police say she left her 5-year-old granddaughter locked out of her apartment.

Kama Waltz was arrested on allegations of first-degree criminal mistreatment and second-degree child abuse.

The investigation began when sheriff's deputies were called just after 4 p.m. to the Canyon Park Apartments at 4700 S.W. 107th Ave. A 5-year-old girl reported to the manager that when she arrived home from school on the school bus, she couldn't get into her apartment, deputies said.

The girl knocked on the door several times before heading to the manager's office for help, according to a news release from the Washington County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies knocked on the door of the apartment for 15 minutes and heard someone inside, but no one answered the door. They finally entered with a manager's key and found Waltz.

"She was extremely intoxicated and did not seem to be aware that her grandchild never returned home from school," the news release said.

The girl was placed with a relative, deputies said.
