Police investigating report of gunfire outside Portland Fred Meyer

PORTLAND, Ore. - Police are investigating a report of a gun being fired outside the Hollywood Fred Meyer in Northeast Portland Tuesday night.

The report that gunshots had been fired in the parking lot of the Fred Meyer in the 3000 block of Northeast Weidler Street came in at about 9 p.m., police said.

Witnesses said a man was wrestling a woman to the ground behind some bushes. But when someone went up to the man, he came out into the parking lot and started shooting.

Police and witnesses said the man fired four or five times.

Police said they searched the parking lot and found shell casings, but they're still checking for bullet holes in any cars or in the ground. They said the people who called 911 reported being shot at.

One witness, who didn't want to be identified, said the shots were "warning shots" and the man was "raging."

Police and a search dog looked for the suspect in the area, but said they didn't find any signs of him. There was also no sign of the woman he was apparently wrestling with before the incident.

Investigators checked with the store for surveillance video but a police officer said it didn't appear any of the cameras captured the incident.

No injuries were reported.
