PORTLAND, Ore. - A woman escaped a house fire with her puppies in Southeast Portland Friday night.
The fire started at around 11 p.m. at a home in the 5600 block of Southeast Flavel Drive. Firefighters said flames were shooting out of the home when they arrived. Crews called for more resources with a second alarm.
Firefighters said the owner had a lot of items stored in the home and those items fueled the flames.
The woman who owns the home didn't want to give her name, but she told KATU how she escaped with her dogs.
"I was sleeping in the front room in my sleeping chair with my two dogs and I heard the sound of a pane of glass breaking like somebody was breaking in the window," she said. "I was afraid it was a burglary and just then the whole window exploded and a giant fireball clear to the ceiling. I grabbed my purse and puppies and took off out of the front door."
It's unclear what caused the fire.
The woman said she doesn't have insurance to cover the damage. The Red Cross helped her find a place to stay.
"Everything I own is gone. Except my two puppies."
