This teenager from Reynolds High School would rather spend his time helping others than staying at home playing video games.

Ben Nguyen does so much to help the community, a national retail chain recognized him with a special honor.

On one recent day, the junior had no idea what was about to happen in his AP government class until his teacher called him up to the front of the class. Casey Shaw from Walmart had quite the surprise for him.

“Walmart is giving you this HP Stream Notebook and a $75 gift card to help with either software for the laptop or school supplies or anything that you need,” Shaw told Nguyen.

Nguyen received Walmart’s Everyday Hero award for giving back to the community.

Nguyen, who immigrated from Vietnam 10 years ago, gives his time to others and he’s very humble about recognition.

He has a 4.0 GPA and tutors kids who need help in science and math.

“I really don’t like staying at home,” he said. “I want to go around and see stuff. Sometimes I have to wake up early, but it’s really worth doing.”

When he’s not helping his peers, Nguyen’s giving time to homeless shelters and serving meals.

“It’s really fun to meet new people. It’s a form of networking, where I meet adults and talk to them about their careers,” he said.

It’s the first year Walmart honored a student in our area with this award.
