Many, many, many people suggest I add biking to the mix as a means of cross-training.
So, rather than buy another moped or a car as a replacement for the time being, I'm going to go for it.
I haven't owned a bike since I was probably 15 - which is to say a very long time ago.
So, educate me. What should I be looking for? What are the pluses and minuses of what my preliminary research shows are the roughly one billion styles of bike available now?
I'm just looking for a starter. Ideally, I'd like to get something on Craigslist for $150 or less that's good for getting around town. I doubt I'll be careening down a mountain or anything like that any time soon. I imagine that, for as long as I own this bike, I won't be going more than five miles. If I find I want something for longer distances, I'll upgrade.
My initial thought is I don't want what I think of as a classic 12-speed (the kind with the curved hand grips where you bend over the handlebars). I could be talked out of that pretty easily if there's a good reason.
I'm also pretty ignorant as to what kind of helmet is best for around-town riding.
