Alert citizen helps police nab landlord wanted for murder

PORTLAND, Ore. - A landlord wanted for allegedly murdering his tenant was arrested Thursday night, according to the Portland Police Bureau.

Police suspect Gary Alan Lewis, 61, murdered 59-year-old Renee Suzanne Sandidge-Crowell, who rented a separate unit of Lewis' home.

The Multnomah County Medical Examiner on Friday said Sandidge-Crowell died of blunt force trauma to the head.

Police said Tuesday evening they had found the body of Sandidge-Crowell on the property of the home at 3934 N.E. 66th Ave. They had been looking for her since they were called to the home on a welfare check last Friday night.

Police said an alert community member saw a man who fit Lewis' description walking in Northeast Portland's Roseway neighborhood just before 8 p.m. Thursday. That person called 911.

Police arrived and confirmed that the man was Lewis. They took him the Multnomah County Jail and booked him on charges of murder and unlawful use of a weapon.

On Thursday, police released a new photo of Lewis to aid in his capture.

He was recorded on surveillance video at a Portland area business. Police released an image from that video. It's unclear when the video was taken. Police did not say the name of the business.

Neighbors said Lewis and Sandidge-Crowell did not get along, fighting frequently.

Lewis will be arraigned Friday.
