Officials at the scene said the man, 44-year old Steven Green, was a U.S. Marine veteran. His body was given a full military ceremonial procession out of the collapse scene after the recovery.
Teams were working their way to him late Wednesday morning at the facility, operated by Wilcox Family Farms. Green was an employee at the facility and was doing routine maintenance when the silo collapsed.
Workers have been reinforcing two other damaged silos that threaten to spill their grain at the scene where workers need to dig out the body.
Green left behind a wife, three daughters and a son, according to the Pierce County Incident Management Team.
The grain silos mix chicken feed for the company that produces eggs sold throughout the Northwest.
In its most recent safety inspection, the Wilcox Family Farms facility was cited for six "serious" safety violations, according to records provided by the Department of Labor and Industries. The company was assessed a $10,000 penalty after that June review.
