Boy, 5, injured by gunfire in SE Portland gang shooting
PORTLAND, Ore. - Police say a 5-year-old boy was hit by gunfire in a gang-related shooting Tuesday night in Southeast Portland.
They said officers responded to a shooting at the Laurel Place Apartments in the 12500 Block of Southeast Powell Boulevard at about 8:51 p.m. and found that a young child had been shot.
A police spokesperson said the boy was shot in the leg, and he is expected to survive. Investigators do not believe the child was the intended target. Officers noticed several rounds struck apartments nearby.
Mayor Charlie Hales called gun violence in Portland "a public safety and public health crisis" in a statement on Wednesday.
"Everyone in our community must rise and face this issue. My thoughts and prayers go out to the family victimized by this terrible event," Hales said. "And I ask everyone in our community to take a stand on the issues of gang violence prevention and illegal gun violence by coming forward to provide information on the shooters. If community members will cooperate, we can get these dangerous, reckless criminals off the streets."
Portland Police Bureau's Gang Enforcement team is investigating. Officers continue to look for the people responsible for the shooting, and ask anyone with information to call (503) 823-4106. Tips may also be emailed to GunTaskForce@portlandoregon.gov.
