City council hears from public on proposed short-term rental tax
PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland City Council held its first public hearing Wednesday on proposed fees for short-term rentals in the city.
One tax would charge the rental companies like Airbnb $4 per room, per night.
They expect it would bring in around $1.8 million a year, and the money would go toward funding home ownership for displaced families.
Another charge would go toward promoting tourism.
Airbnb officials say the tax would unfairly penalize hosts who depend on home sharing to afford staying in their homes.
A final vote on the proposed taxes is scheduled for a future date.
