COLUMBIA CITY, Ore. – Deputies arrested a 40-year-old Columbia City man earlier this month who is accused of sending sex toys, pornography videos and inappropriate messages to a 14-year-old.

The parents of another teenager say they told Columbia City Police that the suspect, Ryan Calhoun, sent their son inappropriate texts back in December, months before his arrest on encouraging child sex abuse charges in that case.

The boy’s mother, who did not want to be identified, told KATU News she found disturbing texts on her son's cell phone she says came from someone who went by “sugar daddy.”

She said she later learned the messages came from a social media account that belonged to Ryan Calhoun.

“He was purchasing them marijuana, vapes, he bought them condoms,” she said. “[He] requested what you would call a 'mud video' which is inappropriate sexual acts.”

The mother tells KATU News she feels arresting Calhoun earlier could have spared another child the months of therapy her son has endured.

“I have documentation where he says that he was sitting in his basement trying to keep his mind out of the gutter. I also have videotapes that I turned over to the Columbia City police department of Mister Calhoun recording my son and another 15-year-old child in front of my home saying 'oooh, like to watch that. Sure makes me dizzy,'” she said.

Columbia City Police Chief Mike McGlothlin says police started investigating those December reports, but says they had trouble getting teens to confirm those reports and confirming accounts tied to Ryan Calhoun.

It wasn't until this past week police say they confirmed Calhoun gave minors marijuana.

“A small amount of loose-leaf marijuana was provided on at least one incident to the juveniles by the suspect in this case,” said McGlothlin.

Within weeks of Calhoun's arrest - Oregon's Department of Human Services put employee Virginia Luey on paid leave. Police describe Luey as a family-friend of Calhoun's.

The parent we talked with says she believes some of the incidents happened here at Luey's house in St. Helens.

“Apparently they're conducting an internal investigation or review into the matter,” said McGlothlin.

No one answered the door and KATU News wasn't able to reach Luey by phone for comment.

Columbia City Police said some of the texts could be interpreted several different ways, and they never found a clear sexual reference from Calhoun to the teenagers in their case.

Calhoun remains at the Columbia County Jail on two counts of luring a minor, five counts of using a child in a display of sexually explicit conduct, and encouraging sex abuse. He's behind bars on a $455,000 bail.
