Two people managed to escape an apartment fire in Gresham Friday afternoon, but a third person died in the fire.

Crews were called to the Rosewood Commons apartments in the 1200 block of SE Kane Drive just after 2 p.m.

Firefighters found a woman on the ground, who said she tossed her dogs form her window and then took the plunge herself. She was hospitalized with burns to her upper body and throat.

"Reports were that her boyfriend or husband was still inside and so we immediately went to work to search the building, the second floor and locate him. We did eventually locate him, but he was deceased unfortunately," Gresham Fire Chief Todd Keathley said.

Firefighters had to enter through a second-story window, because there was too much fire in the stairwell and at the front door. A third person was able to escape the fire without getting injured.

"It was just a bunch of smoke and fire," eye-witness Joe Rankins said. "I saw cops running around knocking on doors and windows."

Rankins says the man who died helped maintain the property and worked overnights. He says he might have been asleep when the fire broke out.

The brunt of the fire damage was contained to one apartment, but neighboring units suffered water and smoke damage.

Early reports indicate the fire started in the kitchen, but the investigation is ongoing.
