Dead whale gets burial near the sea in Seaside
PORTLAND, Ore. - It wasn't exactly a burial at sea, but it was the closest thing to it.
The city of Seaside on Wednesday buried the dead whale that had washed ashore earlier in the week.
A backhoe and excavator pushed the 40-foot gray whale up the beach and away from the ocean, where there was more sand to work with.
The team dug a hole about 8 feet deep in the sand in an area that will likely be covered by a dune soon.
Keith Chandler, who works for the Seaside Aquarium, said the team started work at about 5:30 a.m. and finished around 9:30.
