Deputies arrest 14-year-old boy accused of stabbing grandmother while she slept on couch
LONGVIEW, Wash. – Cowlitz County Sheriff’s Office deputies arrested a 14-year-old boy who’s accused of stabbing his grandmother in the neck as she slept on Monday night.
Deputies responded to the 800 block of Stella Road, about 4 miles south of Longview, around 8 p.m. for a report of a stabbing.
Police say a 55-year-old man who lived at the house told dispatch that his sister, Sharon Hesseldahl, 59, was stabbed in the neck by her grandson.
An ambulance transported Hesseldahl to St. John Hospital. She was out of surgery and stable Tuesday morning.
The victim's brother was in a bedroom inside the home when deputies say he heard his sister scream from the living room where she'd been sleeping on a couch.
"And there was a very large kitchen knife nearby. He asked her what happened and she said I think he - her grandson - stabbed her," said Cowlitz County Sheriff's Office Chief Criminal Deputy Charlie Rosenzweig.
Deputies arrived at the home and found the 14-year-old grandson standing in the living room, motionless.
The victim’s brother was attending to her injuries.
According to court documents, the brother asked the victim's grandson "for assistance multiple times, but he did not respond; standing observing with a blank stare on his face."
Court documents also show the teen "admitted to stabbing Hesseldahl in the neck" and that the teen "obtained the knife from the butcher block in the kitchen" then told detectives "he stabbed Hesseldahl in the neck as she laid on the couch."
Investigators say the same boy had been previously arrested in Skagit County for stabbing his mother.
Court records show the teen was incarcerated in that case for 5 weeks, but also show the charges were dismissed because the teen was found "incompetent."
The 14-year-old boy was booked at the juvenile detention facility Monday night on a first-degree domestic violence assault charge.
