Deputy fired after probe of son's accidental fatal shooting

VANCOUVER, Wash. (AP) A Clark County, Wash., sheriff's deputy found to have violated policies in the 2010 accidental shooting death of his 3-year-old son has been fired.

Chief Criminal Deputy Mike Evans said he notified Detective Ed Owens of his termination Tuesday. The meeting included Sheriff Garry Lucas and Owens' lawyer.

The seven-year veteran had been on paid administrative leave since December 2010. Evans told The Columbian that the termination is effective immediately.

Owens' son Ryan shot himself Sept. 14, 2010, while playing with his father's gun at their Battle Ground home.

A sheriff's internal affairs investigation report and a prosecutor's report indicated Owens blamed his 11-year-old stepdaughter and coerced her into making a false confession. He was also faulted for firearms storage.

Owens' lawyer Steve Myers says the internal affairs report isn't accurate and omitted evidence that supported Owens and his wife.
