Driver says man lying in the road when hit in Southeast Portland

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A man lying in the middle of the road was killed when a car hit him at Southeast 172nd and Division Thursday night, police said.

Portland Police said the man was hit just after 8:30 p.m.

He died at the scene.

On Friday afternoon, police identified the man as 46-year-old Angelo Elton Tupper.

The driver stayed on scene and cooperated, police said. They also said he wasn't under the influence of intoxicants.

The driver told police Tupper was lying in the road and he didn't see him until the last second.

Police don't know why Tupper was lying in the middle of the road, but he was at a nearby lounge just before the crash, police said.

Police are still investigating the exact cause of Tupper's death, they said.
