Eastbound lane of Morrison Bridge closed for deck inspection

PORTLAND, Ore. -- Drivers heading east on the Morrison Bridge over the next three weeks could see some delays.

Multnomah County has closed one eastbound lane as it inspects the lift span deck. That deck was installed in 2012, but the county says it shows sign of premature wear and tear and some of its panels have loosened. The inspection will allow crews to take the panels out, inspect them and replace them if necessary.

The S.W. Naito on-ramp, S.E. Water Avenue off-ramp and all freeway ramps will stay open during the work. Crews will close the middle eastbound lane as well between 7 a.m. and 3 p.m. for safety during the work.

The county hired a forensic engineering consultant to analyze the worn panels to figure out what caused them to degrade so quickly. The county is looking into legal action over the building and installation of the deck panels.
