Ex Novo Brewing connects with nonprofits for the greater good
PORTLAND, Ore. —
"Better beer for the greater good" is the operating principle and slogan for the Ex Novo Brewing Co. in North Portland.
Owner Joel Gregory opened the brewery 3.5 years ago with the mission to give all profits to charity.
“Really wanted to put my own spin on something,” he said. “I didn’t feel like anything was really lacking from the Portland beer scene. There’s so much here. But I really thought that I could do a new angle on it.”
Gregory and his 28 employees produce a wide variety of beer – from their signature Elliot IPA to a Mexican lager called “The Most Interesting Lager in the World.”
Both are sold up and down the West Coast.
“I really love craft beer, and I wanted to focus on doing a good job of that and giving another solid brewery here in Portland,” Gregory said. “If businesses can do this -- they don’t have to be all profits to charity -- but if they could find ways to integrate with nonprofits to where they’re not spending so much time raising funds.”
He reviews which nonprofits to connect with once a year, and currently is supporting Mercy Corps, Friends of the Children, Impact Northwest and the International Justice Mission.
