Fire at recycling plant turns out to be difficult to put out

PORTLAND, Ore. - Crews spent hours trying to put out a fire at a recycling center early Saturday morning.

Firefighters responded to a call at the K.B. Recycling Center at 9602 Clackamas Rd. at about 4:30 a.m.

They found a large pile of trash on fire when they got there. Because there was lots of debris and the area was hard to get to, they called a second alarm at 8 a.m.

Crews spent the morning ventilating the area and removing debris from the building using heavy equipment.

Smoke drifted through the area and across I-205 and Highway 212 for much of the morning.

Investigators are working go figure out what caused the fire.
