Broken fire service line closes stretch of Southwest Alder Street
PORTLAND, Ore. – A broken fire service line caused city officials to close Southwest Alder Street is closed between 4th and 5th avenues Wednesday morning as water gushed onto the roadway.
Portland Water Bureau responded to the scene and said the stretch of roadway will remain closed until repairs are completed.
Officials say the fire service line broke and started gushing water into the street for about an hour.
Crews shut off the valve to isolate the leak, but now they have to repair the pipe and possibly the road.
The force of the water appears to have lifted the pavement a bit.
Alder connects onto the Morrison Bridge, so the morning commute will be busy with the detour.
Portland Water Bureau said the public should use caution as traffic could slow or stop in the area. They say to avoid delays, motorists should use alternate routes around the work site.
