Good police work, tasty sandwich get naked man off ledge

PORTLAND, Ore. - A deft touch by police - and a good sandwich - were enough to convince a man down off the parking structure he was threatening to jump from Saturday.

Police said they were called to the building at S.W. 15th Ave. and S.W. Yamhill just after 11 a.m. The man was naked, cutting himself with a knife and threatening to jump off the building.

A crisis-intervention officer talked to the man, who said he was hungry. Police rustled up a sandwich at the nearby Hotel deLuxe, and the man was convinced to walk away from the ledge and eat.

Once he was safely away, police took him to the hospital to be evaluated.

Police said there might be criminal charges related to vandalism to cars and the parking structure, as well as other crimes.
