Here's how you can meet the deadline for Cover Oregon

The deadline is almost here for people who need to sign up for health coverage through Cover Oregon. You must turn in your application by the end of the day Wednesday, April 30.

You can get help: there are two events in Portland on Tuesday where you can meet with certified insurance agents in person, get answers and sign up.

The Cover Oregon web site shows an event from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Musicians Local 99, 325 NE 20th Avenue, in Portland.

The other event runs from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Multnomah County Health Department, 10th Floor, 426 SW Stark Street, in Portland.

Carol Garzillo came to a similar event on Monday at the BESThq offices in Beaverton. She said she has insurance already, but it is very expensive. She wanted to talk with an agent face-to-face to see if there were other options that would cost less than the $1,300 per month she said her family pays.

"I think I'll feel more informed and I can make a better decision about what is the best plan for my family," said Garzillo.

Jennifer Allain worked at the same event as an insurance agent for her business, "The Insurance Coach," helping people like Garzillo.

"There's still a need, and when there's a need we have to respond as a community. The month is almost over," said Allain. "There's still a lot of people who need to enroll."

She encouraged people who have not yet applied for coverage to do so before the deadline.

"I think that resolving stress makes us happier, so I think for the sake of happiness we should go ahead and get this taken care of," added Allain.

Michael Cox with Cover Oregon said people can still apply in the three following ways:

  • Make an appointment with a certified insurance agent or community partner who can help you enroll in a plan free of charge
  • Fill out an online PDF application and submit it to Cover Oregon electronically, or by fax or mail (application must be postmarked by April 30)
  • Attend an enrollment event hosted by a community partner in your area
