ID theft ring hit 800 mailboxes, police say

MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) Medford police say there are up to 20 suspects in an identity-theft ring that hit about 800 mailboxes in Jackson County

Police say the thefts began in September, and some victims lost several thousand dollars.

Police say the thieves stole mail, forged checks and got illegal debit and credit cards. Besides mailboxes, they broke into cars to get victims' information.

The Medford Mail Tribune reports two people have been arrested on federal charges of identity theft, fraud and conspiracy, and federal warrants have been issued for two more.

Sgt. Brent Mak describes the thieves as "basically transients who couch-surfed and flopped in hotels."
