Improperly extinguished smoking products lead to large fire in Cornelius

CORNELIUS, Ore. - It took firefighters about 20 minutes to put out a large fire in Cornelius on Saturday night.

Firefighters believe the fire started when smoking products weren't extinguished properly on the back deck of the house, and that it was made worse by strong winds pushing into the house.

There were four adults napping at the house when the fire broke out around 8:35 p.m. They woke up to the sound of crackling flames and left the house.

All four made it out without injuries.

Investigators believe the fire caused about $90,000 in damage.

One person ran back in to grab a computer; fire officials point out that was a bad idea.

Twenty-five firefighters were involved in the effort.
