Inmate shot and killed by correctional officer in Eastern Oregon

PENDLETON, Ore. - A correctional officer shot and killed an inmate Friday morning after two inmates attacked a third in the prison yard, the Oregon Department of Corrections said.

Jayson Matthew Withers was shot at about 9 a.m. and was taken to the hospital. He was pronounced dead at 9:21 a.m.

According to the Department of Corrections , two inmates attacked a third and when they didn't stop, the correctional officer fired from a yard tower. His bullet hit Withers.

The department said the officer fired the shot to prevent "imminent serious bodily injury" to the inmate who was being attacked.

The department said the inmate who was attacked was taken to a hospital to be treated for his injuries. The third inmate is in disciplinary segregation.

The prison is currently in lockdown and visitation of inmates is suspended until further notice.

Officials released no other names or details.

The Department of Corrections said Withers was serving time on robbery, identity theft and negligent homicide. His earliest release date was Nov. 25, 2018.
