Knife-wielding naked man in custody after standoff with police

VANCOUVER, Wash. -- A naked man wielding a knife has been arrested following a standoff with police Sunday afternoon.

"We came outside and there was just 20 cop cars out here," said Justin Haag, who witnessed the standoff. "Then SWAT started showing up. And that was the moment where I was just like 'Oh my God, something real.'"

Officers on the scene told KATU News they responded to a house in the area of NE Fourth Plain Boulevard and 86th Avenue around 3 p.m., and a naked man wielding a knife came outside.

He ran back inside the house when police fired warning shots and a standoff ensued for about two hours.

Neighbors say they saw the man peeking out of windows at police, even playing banjos for officers at one point.

Vancouver Police have identified the man as Andrew Helmsworth. He was arrested around 6 p.m. on a felony assault charge. Police say he tried to attack a family member.
