A large plume of black smoke is rising from North Portland near the St. Johns Bridge.

A Sauvie Island firefighter tells KATU the smoke is coming from a fire at Schnitzer Steel. He says gates were locked when firefighters arrived on scene, and no one was inside.

Schnitzer Steel is a steel manufacturing and scrap metal recycling company headquartered in Portland; the fire started in a scrap yard at one of its facilities in North Portland.

The smoke brought many bystanders to the scene, many dropping everything to take a look.

"It's something you don't see every day. I hope there's not people there," said Samuel Izaguirre. "Looks like black smoke so looks like it's not going to end soon."

For hours, dozens of fire crews battled the flames that sent even more smoke into the air. The Oregon DEQ says they are monitoring the situation closely. Currently, the air quality in Portland is healthy, but moderate in Beaverton.

No injuries have been reported and the cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
