Long Beach, WA standoff ends after man kills himself, police say
LONGBEACH, Wash. - A man fatally shot himself at a trailer park Monday after a standoff with police, according to a Pacific County sheriff's deputy.
Long Beach police got a call at about 11 a.m. after a man was shot in the leg at the Safe Haven RV park at 1300 North Pacific Ave., said Chief Criminal Deputy Pat Matlock.
The man was taken to the hospital. His injuries were not believed to be life-threatening.
Police were told the shooter was inside a trailer. Police evacuated the trailer park and tried to talk to the suspect inside the trailer, Matlock said.
The man wouldn't talk to police.
At some point, smoke began coming from the roof of the trailer, Matlock said. As the smoke increased, the suspect came out of the trailer brandishing a gun. He didn't point it at police. Instead, he shot himself.
Matlock said no police officer or sheriff's deputy fired a shot.
Fire engulfed the trailer and ammunition stored inside it began to explode. Since the trailer park is just three blocks from the beach, the spring break crowd there could hear the explosions, Matlock said.
Firefighters later controlled the blaze at the trailer park.
The identity of the dead man has not been released, pending the notification of his family.
A local elementary school and an early childhood education center were briefly locked down.
