PORTLAND, Ore. - A man died during an apartment fire in Southeast Portland on Friday morning, Portland Fire & Rescue said.
The fire started around 3 a.m. in the Cascade Village apartment building near SE 125th and Division.
The fire started in the 50-year-old man's apartment. A mother and her 4-year-old son who live below him and called 911 were rescued by fire crews.
After they had been rescued, crews found the man uncounscious in his apartment. He had suffered severe burns and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Five people total were forced from the building.
Firefighters said the cause of the fire was determined to be discarded and abandoned smoking material.
