Man lights himself on fire while trying to steal gas, police say

PORTLAND, Ore. - A man's attempt to steal gas quickly went up in flames Sunday, police said.

Police said 63-year-old Harry Frederick Suniville accidentally lit himself on fire just after 11 a.m. while he was trying to pour stolen gas into his vehicle.

Police said he stole a partially filled gas can from a truck parked next to his own and began pouring it into his own car - the only problem was he was smoking a cigarette while he did so.

The gas caught on fire, burning his socks and pants and singeing his hair and eyebrows, police said. Suniville's vehicle had to be towed away because it suffered fire damage. Police said the truck Suniville's stole the gas from also suffered fire damage.

Suniville was charged with second-degree criminal mischief, reckless burning and third-degree theft.
