Mom allegedly confessed to drowning 2-year-old daughter in Cannon Beach hotel
PORTLAND, Ore. - Disturbing new details emerged Monday from court documents in the case of a mother charged with murdering her 2-year-old daughter and attempting to murder her 13-year-old daughter.
Inside the Surfsand Resort's room 3302, court documents say police recovered a suicide note with an added quotation: "Please call Greg."
Greg Smith filed for divorce from his wife Jessica Smith in July.
The documents show the day before the killing was discovered, Jessica Smith sent a 15 page email to her estranged husband's colleagues at Klickitat Valley Heath, detailing the couple's marriage troubles.
According to other documents, Jessica Smith's teenage daughter told police her mother drowned her 2-year-old sister.
The teenager also told police "that she wanted to cut her throat and wrists and that her mother had assisted in doing this."
The reason the teen gave police was that "they did not want to live with their father and that they just wanted to get out of it."
The teenage girl also told police she believed her mother was going to the forest to kill herself, the documents report.
The search warrant shows police took swabs from inside the hotel room's bathtub drain, as well as debris from inside one of the dead 2-year-old's ears.
A Coast Guard helicopter, called in to search for Jessica Smith and her missing SUV, spotted both two days later on a remote road off highway 26, 15 miles east of Cannon Beach.
Inside the SUV, court documents show police found razor blades, bloody paper towels and a bloody diaper.
Smith told police she stayed with her vehicle until she was found, even taking a bath in a nearby creek.
The documents say Smith admitted to police that she drowned her 2-year-old daughter.
She also told them, according to court documents, that she used a paint-scraper razor blade to cut her teenage daughter's wrists and neck.
The court documents quote Cannon Beach police Chief Jason Schermerhorn saying that Smith's 13-year-old daughter told him that "we," apparently referring to herself and her mother, had put the baby in the bathtub while the baby was sleeping.
The chief also told investigators that the 13-year-old told him "they" - apparently another reference to the older sister and her mother - were afraid the children's father Greg Smith was going to do something to them.
Investigators said that the 13-year-old told LifeFlight medical staff that her mother drowned her 2-year-old sister and that her older sister wanted to cut her own throat and her wrists and her mother helped her to do that because of her parents' separation.
Smith had rented the room the girls were found in the day before.
A Clatsop County grand jury indicted Smith on aggravated murder charges for the death of her toddler and attempted murder for injuries to her 13-year-old daughter.
At this point KATU is not naming the surviving daughter because of the circumstances learned in Monday's affidavit.
