Mother of slain hair salon owner files suit against former Gladstone officer
The mother of slain hair salon owner Deborah Higbee Benton has filed a wrongful death suit against her daughter's husband.
Former Gladstone police officer Lynn Benton is accused of offering to pay for his wife's death.
Higbee Benton was reported to have been beaten, shot and strangled in her Gladstone beauty salon in 2011.
Irene Berg, 70, brought the suit on behalf of her daughter's estate. She is seeking $900,000 in damages.
"We believe Deborah suffered a great deal at the time of her death," Carol Hepburn, Berg's Portland attorney, said in a news release Tuesday. "Her mother continues to suffer from the loss of her daughter. Irene Berg is at an age when a mother would rely on her daughter for support and guidance."
Berg lives in Walnut Creek, California, according to her attorney.
Benton is expected to go on trial in early 2015.
