Motorcycle rider dies in crash with car in NE Portland
A motorcycle rider died Sunday night after he crashed into the side of an SUV in Northeast Portland.
Officers arrived at the crash scene near NE 57th Avenue and Sacramento Street about 9:45 p.m. to find the motorcycle rider, 45-year-old Erik Thomas Fry, unconscious in the street.
Emergency crews started medical treatment, however Fry was pronounced deceased.
Initial crash reports state that Fry was riding south on 57th Avenue toward Sandycrest Terrace when Andy Nguyen, 43, pulled his Nissan Juke away from the curb to do a U-turn and park on the opposite side of the street.
Fry crashed into the driver's side of Nguyen's vehicle. Officials said he was speeding at the time of the crash.
Nguyen was treated for minor injuries from an airbag deployment. Police said he didn't show any signs of impairment.
The Oregon State Medical Examiner is working to determine whether Fry was intoxicated at the time of the crash.
Portland Police didn't cite or arrest Nguyen in the crash. They will forward the results of their investigation to the District Attorney's office for review, and they may consider charges.
The Portland Police Bureau's Major Crash Team had the intersection closed for several hours to investigate the collision.
This is a developing story; updates will be posted as information comes in.
