New grocer fills void left by defunct Pearl District market
A Southwest Portland grocer is taking over the 10,000-square-foot grocery spot recently vacated by Local Choice Produce Market.
John Attar, proprietor of Barbur World Foods, will open World Foods in February. The store will feature products from more than 55 countries.
World Foods, 830 N.W. Everett St., store will have a produce department offering organic options as well as a meat and seafood section and butcher shop, chef-run deli, and a beer and wine bar.
Attar and his family have run its Barbur store for nine years. His wife, Mirna Attar, owns and operates Ya Hala Lebanese Cuisine and was winner of the 2013 Portland Iron Chef competition. She will oversee the grocery's catering operations.
The owners of Local Choice Produce Market, Georgeanne and Don Sader, spent $2 million to open the store last January. The business closed in October.
