Oregon deals with sharp increase in syphilis cases
PORTLAND, Ore. —
Oregon is now dealing with an epidemic outbreak of the sexually transmitted disease syphilis.
Last year, Oregon was eighth in the nation for syphilis cases, but it ranked 27th in population.
After nearly eradicating the disease a decade ago, there were close to 600 cases in Oregon last year.
Men who have sex with other men are at higher risk.
Untreated syphilis can lead to serious health problems.
