Parents rally to support PPS teachers

PORTLAND, Ore. -- A group of parents and community members rallied at Portland Public Schools headquarters Wednesday morning on the final day of mediated contract negotiations.

After months of discussion, there is still no final agreement on a contract for teachers in Portland Public Schools.

Contract talks have been going on since the spring, but the school board declared an impasse on Nov. 20th. Wednesday is the final day of negotiations between the district and teachers union with a mediator.

Some smaller items in the contract have tentative settlements, but the larger issues of healthcare and teacher workload remain sticking points.

The group, Parents Stand with Portland Teachers, wants to send a message to Portland Public Schools Superintendent Carole Smith to not force a strike, and negotiate on everything. They planned a rally to deliver that message beginning at 9 a.m. at district headquarters.
