Police believe woman killed at Cedar Mill apartments was targeted

CEDAR MILL, Ore. - Police said Thursday that the deadly stabbing of a woman while she worked at an apartment complex was not random.

Police said they think that Nicole Laube was targeted by someone who knew enough about her to know she was working at the Timber Creek Apartments in the late afternoon Tuesday and sought her out. Detectives said her killer stabbed her outside of the building in the parking lot. She had just started a job at the complex.

Laube ran 100 to 130 feet to get away before she collapsed in the breezeway of the apartment building. That's where a neighbor saw her. Laube told the neighbor she had been stabbed, and the neighbor called 911. When police got to the complex there was nothing they could do to save her.

Detectives said it is possible Laube knew her killer.

"We don't think there is someone out there necessarily who is an additional danger to the public," said Washington County Sheriff's Office spokesman Sgt. Bob Ray. "We think there was a specific reason for this and that she was targeted. I don't think it had anything to do with where she was. I think it had to do with who she was."

Detectives are interviewing Laube's friends at the Extreme Edge Gym in Beaverton, where she spent five days a week training for fitness competitions. A friend and manager there said detectives were out there twice Thursday.

"A lot of things go through your head ... how is something like that even possible--to happen to someone as nice as her, a mother," Laube's friend, Carlos Salazar, told KATU.

Laube had two young children and a husband, who detectives said is cooperating.

Her husband told KATU on Thursday that this has been overwhelming as he has trying to shield his children from the public eye, at a loss for how to cope with this tragedy.

Anyone who has any information about this case is asked to call the Washington County Sheriff's Office at 503-629-0111.

A memorial service for Laube will be held Thursday, Aug. 28 at 7 p.m. at SW Bible Church at 14605 S.W. Weir Road in Beaverton.
