Police: Man arrested after crashing stolen Model A Ford into river

PRINEVILLE, Ore. - A good old-fashioned Sunday joyride to the river was not without its consequences.

Erik Blake Halpin, 34, was arrested Sunday near Prineville after police said he stole a 1930 Ford Model A coupe and crashed it into the Crooked River along Highway 27.

It all started Saturday, when the car was reported stolen to the Prineville police. Then, on Sunday around 3 p.m., Oregon State Police received a call that the car had gone off the road and rolled into the river.

Witnesses said they watched Halpin swim from the wreck to the shore, and police arrested him.

He was sent to the hospital in Bend by air ambulance.

Halpin, a transient, was charged with unauthorized use of a motor vehicle; driving under the influence of intoxicants; first-degree criminal mischief; and failure to perform the duties of a driver involved in an accident.
