Police: Man assaulted TriMet driver, threw bottle at bus

TIGARD, Ore. - A man attacked a TriMet driver and a bystander after the driver tied to take a photo of vandalism on a bus, police said.

The bus was parked at the Washington Square transit center around 7 a.m. Friday. The driver noticed that the suspect had vandalized several seats and tried to take a photo, according to Tigard police spokesman Jim Wolf.

Wolf said the suspect, 34-year-old Michael Olivo, grabbed the cell phone and assaulted the driver. A bystander who tried to intervene was also hit in the face.

Olivo then ran away from the mall, Wolf said.

Police officers were searching for Olivo around the mall when witnesses reported seeing him running towards the Garden Home area. Another bus driver then spotted him along Olsen Road after Olivo threw a bottle at the bus, according to Wolf.

Tigard police and a K-9 unit from Hillsboro headed to that area and eventually found Olivo hiding in a backyard along SW 74th Avenue.

Olivo was arrested and faces charges for assault, robbery, theft, criminal mischief and harassment.
