PORTLAND, Ore. – The man accused of sexually assaulting a woman at a housewarming party in Northeast Portland early Sunday morning admitted to officers that he had “sniffed glue and drank malt liquor” before the alleged event took place, court documents show.

Party guests told police that shortly after 1 a.m. a naked man, later identified as 43-year-old Robert Engelsman, walked into the home near N.E. 36th and Killingsworth Street. No one at the party knew who Engelsman was.

Once inside the house, witnesses said he approached a woman in the kitchen and “immediately began groping her, lifting up her skirt, and pressing his erect penis in the area of [her] crotch,” a probable cause affidavit said.

Police said the woman started pushing Engelsman away and other partygoers ran him out of the house.

"Glad they caught him," neighbor Ren told KATU News while asking that we not share her last name. "That's crazy."

Officers found him several houses away, hiding in a stranger’s SUV. Court documents say he squirted lotion all over the vehicle’s seats.

During a police interview, Engelsman said he had been sniffing glue and drinking malt liquor, and took off this clothing because he was hot. He told officers he was walking by the house and heard a female voice that reminded him of an ex-girlfriend, and that he went inside because he “wanted to have sex with her,” the affidavit said.

Engelsman claims that after being told to leave he ran down the block and hid in the car because he knew police would be searching for him.

Engelsman was booked into the Multnomah County Jail on charges of sex abuse, burglary and public indecency charges.

Engelsman was released from jail just three days before the weekend attack after serving 30 days on a Marion County conviction for theft and using inhalants.

Police said Engelsman wrote the woman an apology letter while he was in a holding cell.
