Police: Sister shot when brother pulled handgun from his waistband

SALEM, Ore. A Salem man was arrested after his gun unexpectedly fired and hit his younger sister in the leg, according to police.

Salem police said Raymond Hernandez, 24, was drinking when he pulled a handgun from his waistband. He was unloading the gun when it fired, striking his 18-year-old sister.

The bullet ended up lodged in a bedroom door. There was a boy in the bedroom at the time, police said.

The woman who was hit is expected to recover. There were also several other people in the home at the time who were not hit.

Officers arrested Hernandez on charges of assault and reckless endangerment. They also seized the gun, which was found near the scene.

Hernandez also faces charges for failing to appear in municipal court for a previous disorderly conduct charge, as well as charges of menacing related to a domestic violence incident in December at the same house, police said.

People in the house originally told police that the shot came from an unknown person outside the house, but officers got suspicious when the evidence didn't add up.
